He was a devoted Christian who opted for a literal interpretation of Romans 13:1-2, where Paul the Apostle writes, “Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God,” and, “Whosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God.”

Commander Abu Bakr, a member of the High Negotiations committee, has described the Russian and Iranian forces in Syria as occupiers since they are the guarantors of the Syrian regime in the Eastern Ghouta area.
Abu Bakr tweeted “Russians and Iranians are guarantors and in besieging Ghouta are continuing, and as half a million starve and the children die of starvation. What guarantee do you speak [of]?"

Yassin Al Haj Saleh is one of Syria’s leading political dissidents. He spent from 1980-1996 in Syrian prisons and became one of the key intellectual voices of the 2011 Syrian uprising. He spent 21 months in hiding within Syria, eventually escaping to Istanbul. He was interviewed via email by New Politics co-editor Stephen R. Shalom in early November 2014.
